EPDM Description

   EPDM is made from ethylene, propylene, and a diene comonomer that enables crosslinking via sulfur vulcanization. The most important characteristic of EPDM is its superior resistance to oxidation, ozone and erosion. EPDM O-rings, or ethylene propylene O-rings, are a family of synthetic elastomers with lower cost steam and chemical resistance, particularly for applications involving solvents, acids and other mild chemicals.

 
EPDM Performance
Aging Resistance 
  EPDM has excellent weathering resistance, ozone resistance, heat resistance, acids and alkali resistance, steam resistance. It has color stability, electrical properties, oil filling and room temperature fluidity. EPDM rubber can be used for a long time at 120°C. And it can be used at 150-200°C shortly and intermittently. Adding appropriate amount of antioxidant can increase the temperature of use. EPDM crosslinked with peroxide can be used under harsh conditions. When the concentration of ozone is 50 PPHM and the tensile strength is 30%, the EPDM rubber will not crack for more than 150 hours.


Corrosion Resistance
   Due to the lack of polarity and low unsaturation of ethyl propylene rubber, it has better resistance to various polar chemicals such as alcohol, acid, alkali, oxidant, refrigerant, detergent, animal and plant oil, ketone and ester. But EPDM has very poor stability with aliphatic and aromatic solvents (such as gasoline, benzene, etc.) and mineral oils and is seldom used in those applications.

Good Steam Resistance
  EPDM is also known for its resistance to high temperature steam. And it’s better than its heat resistance. It has no change in the high temperature steam at 230°C for about 100 hours.

Good Heat Stability
  EPDM also has good heat stability, but it closely related to all vulcanizations systems.

Excellent Electrical Insulator
  EPDM has excellent electrical insulation and corona resistance, and its electrical properties are better or close to those of SBR, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, polyethylene and cross-linked polyethylene.

Good Compression Set Resistance
   Because of the non-polar substituents in the molecular structure of EPDM, the molecular cohesion energy is low, and the molecular chain can keep the flexibility in a wide range, second only to natural rubber and cis-butadiene rubber, and can still be maintained at low temperature.
